Into the Sun
For the past year in between shaping and glassing surfboards and fins I have been working on new original digital music. It is an interesting time in creating music as the digital format has become even more exciting, vibrant, accessible and varied. I recorded all my previous albums with what I describe as traditional analog instruments primarily consisting of guitar, bass, and drums. A guitar amp with effects has its own aesthetic which can be beautiful, powerful, and exciting but I felt there were also limitations and more expansive places I wanted to explore sonically. The bass could be lower, the mids more varied and the drums more succinct and rhythmatized. Within the digital music format I am able to explore a fuller sonic range and broader creative landscape. ‘Into the Sun’ has eight separate original songs but was created within the analog tradition of having a unique experience when listened to in its entirety from beginning to end bringing out the nuances of the blending of varying moods, energies, and themes within one complete work. There is a universal nature to instrumental music which crosses cultural and regional boundaries and taps into the circadian rhythms of the human experience. Going beyond linguistics and into primal communication songs on ‘Into the Sun’ are inspired by machines, heart beats, engines, waves, sunshine, thunderstorms and the relationship between technology, the human condition and the purely natural world. The varied repeating patterns found in nature are transjected into rhythm and sound. The songs of ‘Into the Sun’ are mixed and mastered with the intention of being played with volume on high fidelity sound systems. Basically the louder and better speakers the more the experience comes forward; eighteen inch subs and 1,000 plus watt systems should bump the tracks as they were intended. To differentiat from my previous recordings released under The Green Leaf I am releasing my new digital works under my name Mark Whitney Mehran the Green Leaf Em. The Em stands for Electric Music.Enjoy.
